Demi Lovato’s new documentary, Simply Complicated came out October 17th on YouTube. Demi opens up about her bipolar disorder, eating disorders, addictions, her birth father, her sexuality and so much more. Even though she has always been open about her struggles, this documentary reveals so much more than we already knew as she talks about everything in depth.
She talks about her recent eating disorder relapse. This was kind of bittersweet. I hate to know that she still struggles, but I love that she showed it. Relapse is a big part of recovery…for everyone.
I hate relapsing. It’s ugly. I feel so ashamed if I relapse with anything, even if it’s a minor relapse.
A few weeks before the documentary came out, I self-harmed by snapping an elastic band on my wrist multiple times. This is actually considered a healthy-ish coping mechanism by professionals. I’ve been told by them if I ever feel like self-harming, to do that instead. But to me, after not hurting myself at all for two years, it was a big deal and I did consider it a small self-harm relapse.
I felt weak, ashamed and scared. I slipped up after doing so good for a long time. I felt like I fell a couple steps backwards, and that’s hard on someone who has made a lot of progress.
But after watching the documentary a few weeks after, I realized relapse is a part of recovery and that it’s okay. It’s okay to have a bad day or bad week. Relapse doesn’t make you weak. If you survive a relapse, if you get right back up, you are so strong. You are stronger than you think. Relapse doesn’t mean you’ve failed. Relapse doesn’t mean you’re back where you started. Relapse is not the worst thing. It happens to many people who are in some type of recovery…even Demi Lovato.
