What I Don’t Like About Bell Let’s Talk

Wednesday was Bell Let’s Talk Day. Bell Let’s Talk is one of Canada’s biggest mental health initiative. It is a day where people across Canada talk about a topic many of us don’t talk about – mental illness. It is an attempt to raise awareness and reduce the stigma.

The good news is, we raised over 6.5 million dollars for other mental health initiatives across Canada and the campaign encouraged people to talk about mental illness.

However, the problem is mental health is something we should be able to talk about every day.

Before I get into that though, I just feel the need to bring up the fact that a story was released on Wednesday morning of a girl that was fired from Bell Media because she asked to take a mental health leave, which was order by her doctor.

The girl, Maria Mclean, wrote on a blog post on Canadaland: “Tomorrow, praise will rain down on Bell for their record-setting generosity, and all I’ll be able to think about is how Bell responded to my mental health needs when they were my employer.”

The original story, written by Maria, can be read here: http://www.canadalandshow.com/bell-lets-talk-mental-health-fired/

I have no words for this other than I am furious and it makes me wonder what Bell’s true intentions are. Maybe it’s just one employer who has bad values and priorities but, either way it makes me feel weird about the cause. If mental health is truly something the company truly cares about, everyone should be on the same page when it comes to a companies’ values.

Let’s go back to the original purpose of this article.

I think the day is great. I participated in it and supported, as I do every year.

I love it because it gives a solid platform our country to talk about mental health. A few people on Facebook came out and admitted that they have a mental illness. I think that’s great and empowering. If someone is struggling to admit it, if they are going to do it, they should do it on a day like Bell Let’s Talk Day or another day dedicated to mental health.

The issue is how people kept saying “Today is the day to talk about mental health.”

In a way, this suggests that Wednesday was the only day we could openly talk about mental health; talk about it every day, or any other day, well, you’re annoying and nobody will listen to you.

This is an problem because mental illness is something everyone should be able to freely and openly be able to talk about it any day of the year. Talking, or national conversation about mental illness shouldn’t be tied down to one day a year. Everyone should always be aware and accepting of mental illness in individuals, as well as the issues our country deals with surrounding mental health. Mental illness is always there; people are struggling daily to stay alive or even to get out of bed. And there will always be issues in our country, surrounding mental health, that needs our attention.

Everyday I talk or write about it. Every single day. More people need to start talking more.
