“Put on my music, because I’m going to be there for you” – Demi Lovato

It’s funny how much music and its lyrics can tell our stories for us. I went for an hour long walk the other day. It was beautiful out and I was listening to my music. I realized that I learn a lot about myself and my situations from the music that I listen to. I have always loved music but as I got older, it became a bigger part of my life.

It helps make sense of everything. When I’m trying to put the pieces of a situation together or trying to form thoughts and words, it helps. It makes me feel like I’m not alone because the person behind the beautiful voice has been through the same struggles I have. Music makes me smile, cry, and scream. The music I listen to knows secrets that my best friend or counselor don’t even know.

Take Demi Lovato’s music for example…

Her and her music is a big part of my life. Her music – lyrics and vocals – is one of the reasons I’ve been able to stay so strong. She sings me to sleep at night. Her music calms me down during an anxiety attack and keeps me calm in anxiety-provoking situations. Her music makes me happy, and makes me believe in myself at times where I’m feeling low. Her music makes me feel like I’m not alone. I think that’s because she sings from her heart about situations that she’s been through and I’ve been through similar situations as hers. I almost feel like she’s guiding me and saying “everything’s going to be ok.”

“And if there’s anyone out here tonight that doesn’t feel beautiful enough, or doesn’t feel worthy enough… You’re wrong. Because you guys are all so incredible. And if you’re dealing with any of the issues that I’ve dealt with, don’t be afraid to speak up, because someone will be there for you. And if you think, you’re alone, put on my music, because I’m going to be there for you” – Demi Lovato during one of her concerts

Her lyrics are so powerful, motivating and relatable. Her voice is so calming and filled with strength. She also has fun, happy songs that get me excited, motivate me and make me want to dance.

It’s not just Lovato’s music that has a big impact on me though. Any artist can move me in many different ways. I like music based on its lyrics and meaning, and everything else comes after.

Music is my backup during those times where I have no one to talk to. When all my friends are busy, or during those really early hours in the morning, I put my earphones in and after a few songs, I suddenly feel better. It’s an support system that never leaves and is by my side 24/7 – unless the battery dies.

I don’t care how ridiculous this sounds, but sharing my favourite song with someone is special to me. It’s like sacred. The lyrics are things that I’m afraid to say and you can learn a lot about me and my feelings with one song. All it takes is one song and I feel exposed. So if I share music with you, that means I care about you, a lot.

Now I was going to write a list of songs and explain what each one meant to me, but I decided against it because the songs are personal and have a secret meaning to them, that nobody knows about. Some things just have to stay between a girl and her ipod. But what I will do is write a list of motivational songs, songs that make me feel better.
