Eight Ways to Practice Self-Love on Valentines Day

Single for Valentines Day? Again? Same!

Every year, I dread Valentine’s Day and I get depressed when it comes around. People always say things like ‘it’s just another day’ and ‘there’s nothing to be upset about’. The truth is, I know this and in fact, I’m very independent and don’t need to be in a relationship to be happy. Why do I get upset then? Because it’s a reminder that I don’t have anybody, and I have never been in a relationship, because of things beyond my control and it makes me feel vulnerable.

But this year, I’m trying to focus on loving myself and my friends because in general, that’s more important to me.

Below is a list of ways to practice self-love on Valentines Day, as well as every other day.

Treat yourself to something.

Write yourself a love letter.

I personally think this would be very weird. I don’t know if I would ever do it. Read this article about why and how to write yourself a love letter. As an alternative, you could just simply write a list of things you love about yourself.

Spend time with your best friend(s).

You and your best friend can be valentines. I love my best friend and she loves me. Single people  need a little love too, even if it’s a different type of love.

Make a list of the positives of being single.

This, I will probably do and will probably share it on this blog. It’s a good way to put things into perspective.

Pleasure yourself.

For those who are comfortable doing this, it’s a good alternative to sex. For some people it may even be better. You should feel no shame.

Watch a self-empowerment movie.

Don’t watch romances and stuff your face with ice-cream. This will just make you feel worse. Instead, watch a movie about self-empowerment. There are many movies out there about self-empowerment and “not needing a man”. Some of them are Frozen, How to Be Single, The Other Women, Legally Blonde, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, (500) Days of Summer, Uptown Girls, Eat Pray Love.

Eat your favourite food.

Eat chocolate. Order a pizza for yourself.

Relax.

However, you relax, do it. Take the day off if you can. Wear pajamas all day.

As you can see, you don’t have to be in a relationship to enjoy the day. You don’t need to call your exes or rush to have a date on Valentines Day.

And don’t forget….Chocolate and candy go on sale the next day!
